Around the site
Please feel free to take a wander, with or without a dog, we have paths cut though the long grass beyond the furthest pitches in the camping field as well as through the gap in the hedge between pitch 3 and 10 near the first willow tree.
We have an abundance of wildlife to see, including king fishers that have taken up residence in the bank of our back fishing lake, and a visiting swan on our front lake!
About Hingham
Hingham is a beautiful Georgian market town nestled in Mid Norfolk. It has great character, charm and is steeped in history. Hingham is very quintisentially English, with a green, many independent shops, a church and many lovely Georgian houses which surround the old market place.
Hingham goes back to 925AD and is mentioned in the Doomsday book. Markets were held every Saturday in the 19th century, but they were unable to compete with nearby Norwich, so in 1950 it was eventually closed, and no market operates today.
In the 18th Century Hingham was known as Little London, due to the fact that many socialites came and built magnificent houses here, and these wonderful houses can still be seen today all over the main square.
Hingham's connection to America
Hingham has strong connections with the Americans through its link with Samuel Lincoln who was born and spent his early years in Hingham, and then emigrated to America in the 17th Century on a ship, around the time of the Mayflower. With the help of other residents, he founded the town of Hingham in Massachusetts.
Samuel Lincoln became the great-great-great-great-grandfather of Abraham Lincoln the 16th President of the U.S.A. A section of wood from the Mayflower can be seen in St Andrews Church in Hingham, along with a bust of Abraham Lincoln himself. Lincoln’s tea shop and bistro can be found in the town, commemorating this link with the president and is well worth a visit for its delicious food!
